High Strength Anti-crush Lightweight Aluminum Honeycomb Core Crash Cushion is a crash protection device designed to progressively absorb kinetic energy through the controlled, irreversible collapse of its core structure. It's essentially a sacrificial energy sponge placed in a vehicle's frame to protect its occupants and main structure during a collision, converting destructive impact forces into the work of crushing its own material.
⚙️ How It Works: The Physics of Crushing
The magic lies in its structural geometry. The hexagonal cells effectively resist crushing up to a point, but when their strength is exceeded, they undergo a process called "progressive folding" or frizzling. Here's the step-by-step process:
· Elastic Loading & Peak Force: Upon impact, the honeycomb initially deforms elastically, creating a high initial force peak. Pre-crushing is used to eliminate this peak, making deceleration smoother.
· Plateau Region (Energy Absorption): Past the peak, cell walls begin to fold and buckle, absorbing huge amounts of energy at a nearly constant force for a controlled stop.
· Densification: Once folded almost fully, the material becomes denser, rapidly increasing force. A well-designed attenuator must stop before this point.
· Energy Dissipation: Impact energy is converted into plastic deformation work and friction, lasting just milliseconds.
