5052 Aluminum Honeycomb Energy Absorber with Gradient Thickness Cell Walls for Low-velocity Impact
Pasia Industries, a professional advanced honeycomb core innovator and manufacturer, delivers versatile honeycomb-based products to the global market with more than 20 years of experience. The energy absorption honeycomb core can be produced based on conventional process with glue bonding or innovative process with machinery production with limited usage of special glue to obtain special performance such as high temperature resistance, chemical resistance etc. With sufficient technical know-how and experience, a wide range of standard and custom honeycomb energy absorbers for various applications are successfully delivered to clients with different cell sizes, core densities, crush strengths shapes and sizes. Aluminum honeycomb is the perfect material for energy absorption applications due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. It also has excellent moisture and corrosion resistance.
The 5052 aluminum honeycomb energy absorber with gradient thickness cell walls is a high-performance crash protection core designed specifically for low-velocity impact applications. By combining lightweight 5052 aluminum alloy foil with a hexagonal honeycomb structure and a precisely graded cell-wall thickness profile, this absorber delivers stable, controlled energy dissipation with reduced peak force and high crush force efficiency.
Unlike conventional uniform honeycomb cores, this product uses a gradient thickness cell wall design. Thinner walls at the impact face initiate stable buckling at lower force levels, while thicker walls toward the rear provide higher plateau stress and greater energy absorption. The result is a smoother force-displacement curve, lower peak acceleration, and better protection for people, equipment, and structures during low-speed collisions, drops, and bump events.

Key Features
· 5052 Aluminum Alloy Core
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, formability, and fatigue performance. Suitable for automotive, rail, marine, aerospace ground support, and industrial applications.
· Gradient Thickness Cell Walls
Cell-wall thickness changes progressively across the core to optimize crash initiation and energy absorption. This reduces initial peak force while maintaining high total energy absorption.
· Optimized for Low-Velocity Impact
Ideal for low-speed crashes, drop protection, bump stops, and impact buffers where controlled deformation and low transmitted force are critical.
· High Specific Energy Absorption (SEA)
Provides strong energy absorption per unit mass, helping designers reduce weight without sacrificing safety performance.
· Stable, Predictable Crushing
Progressive folding and controlled buckling avoid sudden collapse and improve crashworthiness.
· Customizable Geometry and Performance
Cell size, foil thickness, gradient profile, panel dimensions, and surface treatment can be tailored to your project.

How It Works
The absorber works through progressive plastic buckling of the aluminum honeycomb cells. The gradient thickness cell walls create a staged response:
1. Initial impact stage — thinner cell walls deform first, keeping the initial peak force low.
2. Intermediate stage — wall thickness increases gradually, raising plateau stress and absorbing more energy.
3. Densification stage — thicker rear walls resist final collapse, providing a safe stopping distance and high total energy absorption.
This design is especially effective for low-velocity impact protection, where limiting peak force is often more important than managing extreme high-speed crashes.
Specifications:
Pasia Honeycomb Energy Absorbers can be supplied based on the cell size, foil thickness and layer, aluminum grade, width and length etc. The shape and parts can be also customized as per the request from client. The crush strength can be achieved on the performance of the foil thickness and special structure.
