Predictable Constant Force Performance Aluminum Honeycomb Energy Absorber
Our Predictable Constant Force Aluminum Honeycomb Energy Absorber is an engineered impact mitigation solution designed to deliver a stable, repeatable, and precisely controlled crush force throughout its deformation stroke. Utilizing the progressive folding mechanism of aluminum honeycomb, it converts kinetic energy into plastic deformation at a near-constant force level—making deceleration predictable and tunable for the most demanding safety-critical applications.
Key Features
· Near-Constant Crush Force – Provides a flat-topped force-displacement plateau, minimizing peak loads and ensuring controlled deceleration.
· Highly Predictable Performance – Tightly controlled crush strength with tolerances as low as 0% to -10%, enabling precise system-level design.
· Customizable Strength – Crush force can be engineered from very low to very high levels by selecting aluminum alloy grade, foil thickness, and cell size.
· Pre-Crushed Option – Pre-crushing eliminates the initial peak force, delivering an idealized elastic–perfectly plastic response from the very start of impact.
· Temperature Stability – Consistent energy absorption performance across a wide operating range (e.g., -29°C to 80°C).
· High Specific Energy Absorption – Lightweight aluminum construction maximizes energy absorbed per unit mass.
· Long Effective Stroke – Efficient crushing over 60%–70% of the original height.
How It Works
Under axial compression, the honeycomb undergoes three distinct phases:
1. Elastic Phase – Load rises linearly to an initial peak.
2. Constant-Force Plateau – Regular, progressive folding of cell walls maintains a nearly constant load—the primary energy-absorbing stage.
3. Densification – Cells compact and load rises sharply (end of useful stroke).
Typical Applications
· Automotive crash test barriers (offset deformable barriers per FMVSS/ECE regulations)
· Nuclear spent-fuel transport cask impact limiters
· Aerospace and defense energy absorption systems
· Rail and transportation crash buffers
· Industrial drop protection and vibration isolation
Pasia Industries, a professional advanced honeycomb core innovator and manufacturer, delivers versatile honeycomb-based products to the global market with more than 20 years of experience. The energy absorption honeycomb core can be produced based on conventional process with glue bonding or innovative process with machinery production with limited usage of special glue to obtain special performance such as high temperature resistance, chemical resistance etc. With sufficient technical know-how and experience, a wide range of standard and custom honeycomb energy absorbers for various applications are successfully delivered to clients with different cell sizes, core densities, crush strengths shapes and sizes. Aluminum honeycomb is the perfect material for energy absorption applications due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. It also has excellent moisture and corrosion resistance.
Specifications:
Pasia Honeycomb Energy Absorbers can be supplied based on the cell size, foil thickness and layer, aluminum grade, width and length etc. The shape and parts can be also customized as per the request from client. The crush strength can be achieved on the performance of the foil thickness and special structure.
